PRESS RELEASE: ÖSTERÄNGEN KONSTHALL IS EXPANDING

13 November 2023 11:46

In January 2024, a remodeling and expansion of Österängen’s konsthall will begin. The renovation is expected to be completed in April of the same year and involves a new, welcoming entrance and a better working environment.
– It is very gratifying that we can now take this step and establish ourselves as all of Jönköping arthall, says Sergei Muchin, chairman of the board of the Österängen’s konsthall.

Österängen’s konsthall has been suffering from acute work environment problems for several years now. There has been a lack of offices and workplaces with daylight and ventilation, staff rooms and staff toilets. Since the fall of 2022, the association has had an intensive dialogue with the landlord Vätterhem and the Culture and Leisure Administration in Jönköping Municipality to find a solution.

Now it is finally clear that the arthall will be able to take over the premises towards the eastern facade (the old solarium), wall to wall with the arthall. This means that for the first time the art hall will have its own entrance from the street and is no longer dependent on the opening hours of the center property. The shop, café and reception will move to the new areas, which means a more welcoming entrance, better sound environment and, not least important: an exhibition hall that will be airier and less cluttered. But above all, the renovation means that the work environment is now significantly improved for the art hall’s employees and that the requirements of the work environment legislation are met.

Österängen’s konsthall has also commissioned Enter Arkitektur to come up with a concept for interior design and design of all surfaces.
– Our audience will still recognize us, but the expansion will mean that we will be better able to respond to the expectations that are placed on us as an institution, says Sergei Muchin.

During the construction period, the art hall will move its operations to a temporary location. The reconstruction, which is planned by the halls’s landlord Vätterhem, is expected to begin in January 2024. The association hopes to be able to open the doors to the “new” Österängen konsthall in April 2024.

– We have had a very good dialogue with both Jönköping municipality and Vätterhem during this process and are happy that we are now finally at the finish line.

Österängen’s konsthall is Jönköping’s stage for contemporary art. The art hall has been run by a non-profit association since 2015. Österängen’s konsthall shows Swedish and international contemporary art and has extensive activities for children and young people.
