I Medan eld sätter sig i min hals gestaltas erfarenheter som är kopplade till språk, utbildning och den svenska nationalstatens föreställningar om “den önskvärda medborgaren”. Utställningen sätter minoritetsspråken meänkieli och svenskt teckenspråk i relation till varandra och till konstruktionen av nationalstaten.
Under flera års tid har konstnärerna fördjupat sig i språkens historia och hittat många likheter i hur de har behandlats av svenska staten i strävan efter ett homogent samhälle. En strävan som finns över hela världen och som verkar för att utradera minoriteter, deras språk och deras kulturer. Med denna bakgrund utforskar konstnärerna vilka strategier för motstånd mot detta som finns. Hur kan man skapa rum för berättelser om hopp, intersektionell solidaritet och kollektiv läkning?
Utställningens titel är hämtad från Audre Lordes dikt “Recreation” från 1997.
Karin Keisu (1995, Juoksengi) är tornedaling, född och uppvuxen i Tornedalen, och Josse Thuresson (1992, Stockholm) är CODA, det vill säga barn till döva föräldrar. De har arbetat som en konstnärsduo sedan 2018 och tog sin MFA från Konstfack 2022. De har bland annat tidigare visats på Konstmuseet i Norr, Luleåbiennalen och Athens Festival of Queer Performance. 2020 vann de KINO DER KUNSTs Project Award i München och 2022 tilldelades de Konstfacks rektorsstipendium för sitt masterprojekt.

Förbjudna språk
Medan eld sätter sig i min hals portrays experiences that are connected to language, education and the Swedish nation-state’s notions of ”the desirable citizen”. The exhibition puts the minority languages Meänkieli and Swedish Sign Language in relation to each other and to the construction of the nation state.
For several years, the artists have delved into the history of the languages and found many similarities in how they have been treated by the Swedish state in the pursuit of a homogeneous society. A quest that exists all over the world and works to eradicate minorities, their languages and their cultures. With this background, the artists explore what strategies for resistance to this exist. How to create space for stories of hope, intersectional solidarity and collective healing?
The title of the exhibition is taken from Audre Lorde’s poem ”Recreation” from 1997.
Karin Keisu (1995, Juoksengi) is Tornedalian, born and raised in Tornedalen, and Josse Thuresson (1992, Stockholm) is CODA, i.e. child of deaf parents. They have been working as an artist duo since 2018 and received their MFA from Konstfack in 2022. They have previously been shown at Konstmuseet i Norr, the Luleå Biennale and the Athens Festival of Queer Performance, among others. In 2020 they won KINO DER KUNST’s Project Award in Munich and in 2022 they were awarded Konstfack’s rector’s scholarship for their master’s project.
