The Apple Machine – Hopkok Fabrik i studio 476

The Apple Machine is a participatory project led by the design collective Hopkok Fabrik and made possible with funding from Nordic Culture Point.

The project aims to introduce children to sustainable practices in food and design, focusing on apples as both an ingredient and a shared cultural symbol across Nordic countries. Play has been a central aspect of the process, serving both as a method for engaging with children and as an outcome, culminating in the creation of playful apple machines.

The project has unfolded through a series of building workshops, urban foraging activities, exhibitions, and public events. Taking place in Gothenburg, Jönköping, Oslo, and Copenhagen, it has adapted to local contexts while maintaining its focus on apples and a child-led, play-based approach throughout. This exhibition is the collective documentation of discoveries, stories, and findings that emerged from the process.

About Us

Hopkok Fabrik is a design collective that focuses on ’food’ as a creative material. Together with children, we co-design projects with play as the core of our process. Inspired by the Nordic dish Hopkok, which transforms leftovers into new tasty adventures, we embrace reinvention by blending traditional methods with playful innovation.

Our projects explore the crossroads of food, design, play, and sustainability. Together, we celebrate the diversity of tastes and traditions while fostering positive relationships with food and each other. Through our work, we aim to create a vibrant hub for creativity and culinary exploration by bringing together designers, artists, educators, foragers, families, and children from across the Nordic countries.
